There’s an old saying that I’m sure you know: Content is king.
This little truism has been repeated again and again. So much so that most of us just take it for what it’s worth and follow the rule. But, as true as it may be, it’s extremely important that we periodically ask questions about these kinds of principles — especially when they determine so much of our marketing strategies.
Why is content the king?
First, let’s figure out what we’re even discussing here. What is content the king of exactly? On the web, content is king because it makes or breaks us. The web is all about information. And, of course, information is content. No surprises there.
So why is it so important for us to be reminded that content is king?
On the web, it’s incredibly easy to get distracted by so many other elements. Web design. Fancy gadgets. Cool apps. The latest 2.0 technology. New social media breakthroughs. All of it looks so good!
But at the end of the day, great content is still going to determine the outcome.
You should really begin to think of your content as a metaphorical king — a person who makes decisions and leads the way. In fact, thinking about your business as a kingdom ruled by your content is a great way to really understand what we mean when we say, “Content is king.”
Think of it…
The king (your content) is the single most important element you have. Regardless of what kinds of changes you make to the castle, the village, or the reserves of the kingdom, the king is still going to call the shots and determine how successful (or unsuccessful) you are compared to all of the other villages (competitors) around you.
Now I realize this metaphor is a bit of a stretch, but here’s where it gets really useful. Start asking yourself these questions every day about your business and your current marketing methods:
If content is really king, then content should be at the forefront of your business model and marketing strategy. Start thinking of new ways to put your king into action to get more results!
